The handbook shelf made a noise.
Hana Resources was alone in the HR archive, which meant the office was either peaceful or hiding something. The lights hummed. The binders leaned. The employee handbooks stood in careful rows like tiny navy judges.
She reached for the latest handbook draft, the one with the clean cover, the updated leave section, and the mysterious sticky note that said only: “Ask Steve?”
The shelf coughed.
“Please tell me the binders are not speaking again,” Hana said.
A green hand appeared between two policy manuals. Then an ear. Then a grin full of filing-cabinet mischief.
The Policy Goblin pulled himself onto the stack of handbooks and dusted off his leafy little jacket. “Technically,” he said, “the binders are not speaking. The undocumented exception is speaking.”
The first warning sign: “We just handle it informally.”
Hana narrowed her eyes. On the desk sat three versions of the same policy. One was approved. One was emailed. One had been edited by someone named Final_FINAL2_REAL.docx.
The goblin pointed at the pile. “A feast.”
Hana opened her glowing clipboard. “No. A cleanup project.”
The Policy Goblin hissed at the blue light. “You cannot defeat me with formatting.”
“No,” Hana said. “But I can defeat you with version control, manager training, signed acknowledgments, and a clear owner for updates.”
The real HR lesson
The goblin appears when policy is vague, inconsistent, outdated, or enforced differently from team to team. The monster is not the handbook itself. The monster is the gap between what the handbook says, what managers do, and what employees experience.
A useful handbook does not need to be dramatic. It needs to be current, understandable, accessible, and connected to actual practice. A policy nobody can find is not a policy. A policy nobody follows is a risk. A policy enforced only sometimes is a goblin nest.
Hana’s field notes
- Use one active handbook. Archive old versions so employees and managers do not rely on outdated language.
- Assign an owner. Every policy should have someone responsible for updates and review.
- Train managers. The handbook cannot supervise people by itself.
- Collect acknowledgments. Keep a record that employees received the current version.
- Check local rules. Employment requirements vary by location and situation.
Final panel
Hana labeled the active handbook folder. The Policy Goblin recoiled.
“You will return,” Hana said.
The goblin grinned from behind a binder tab. “Of course. Someone will update remote work in a Slack thread.”
From somewhere down the hall, an owl hooted.
Hana looked up.
“That better not be the laptop problem.”
